Need natural alternatives for painkillers and anti-inflammatories?
Here's an absolute gem from our kitchen 💎
Ginger, turmeric and black pepper tea is a simple home recovery brew for sore muscles, stiff joints and an immune booster. It is quick to make, easy to repeat and a solid habit to keep in your corner.
The recipe
Ingredients
For approximately three to four cups:
- 1 thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger, thinly sliced
- 2 teaspoons turmeric powder, or a small piece of fresh turmeric root, thinly sliced
- ¼ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
- 750ml to 1 litre freshly boiled water
- Optional: lemon juice or slices
- Optional: honey
For one mug, use 3–4 slices of fresh ginger, ½ teaspoon turmeric powder, a small pinch of black pepper and 250ml hot water.
The quantities above are culinary amounts for a homemade drink. They are not equivalent to the standardised capsule extract used in the clinical trial discussed below.
Method
- Add the ginger, turmeric and black pepper to a coffee French press or heatproof jug.
- Pour over the freshly boiled water.
- Leave to steep for 10–15 minutes.
- Press the French press slowly, or pour the tea through a sieve into mugs or a bottle.
- Add lemon for brightness, honey for sweetness, or both.
- Drink it hot, or allow it to cool before refrigerating.
For a batch, make the full recipe once in the morning and store it in a covered container in the fridge. Drink it cold through the day or gently reheat one cup at a time.
Do not boil the honey. Add it once the drink has cooled slightly. That keeps the flavour smoother and avoids turning your recovery brew into a sticky kitchen experiment.
Add the kick
Ginger gives the brew its warmth. Turmeric brings the golden colour, and black pepper adds the extra kick.
Lemon freshens it up. Honey smooths it out if you prefer a sweeter mug.
How much?
For most healthy adults, two to three cups per day is plenty.
Start with one cup and build from there if it suits you. More is not always better, and homemade tea will never give exactly the same strength in every mug. Which is great if you want to adjust the potency and taste. The turmeric makes it taste pretty gross. Suck it up sunshine, it's medicine.
The study
The study supplied for this post was published in Phytotherapy Research in 2020:
It was a randomised, double-blind trial in 60 people with chronic knee osteoarthritis. Over four weeks, a standardised turmeric-black pepper-ginger formula was compared with naproxen. PGE2, an inflammatory marker in the joint fluid, fell in both groups, with no significant difference between them.
Useful signal, but keep it honest: it was small, short, measured one biomarker and used capsules, not tea.
Use it wisely
This tea works well as one small part of a bigger plan. It can sit alongside Sports and Deep Tissue Massage, HBOT or Nutrition and Supplement Coaching while we work on movement, recovery and better day-to-day consistency.
This is what works for us, and it will probably work for you too, but we cannot guarantee it. Every body is different, so results will vary.
Safety first
This suits most healthy adults, but if you are pregnant, on blood thinners or due to have surgery, check with your GP or pharmacist first. Turmeric, ginger and black pepper can interact with some medicines, so always speak to your GP, prescriber or pharmacist before stopping or changing any prescribed medicine.

FAQ

Yes, many healthy adults can. Two to three cups per day is enough for most people.
Is this the same as a supplement?
No. The study used standardised capsules, and homemade tea is not a measured equivalent.
Results will vary. This tea may support your routine, but it is not a guaranteed treatment for pain, inflammation or joint problems.
